American Cancer Society Pilot Grants for Junior Investigators

The Moores Cancer Center is now accepting applications from junior investigators for American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grants (ACS-IRG #70-002). 

Applicants must be Assistant Professors at UC San Diego, within six years of their first independent faculty appointment. Up to five pilot grants will be awarded, for up to $30,000 per award.

Applications are due electronically by 5 p.m. September 10, 2015. Grants will be awarded in December, 2015. 

 

Drs. Mohit Jain and David T. Pride Awarded Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Funding

Two Department of Medicine physician-scientists have received 2015 Clinical Scientist Development Awards from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Both will receive $486,000 over three years to help them transition to independent research careers:

  • Dr. Mohit Jain, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine (Cardiology) and the Department of Pharmacology
  • David T. Pride, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and the Department of Pathology

 

Dr. Alan R. Saltiel, Leading Metabolics Researcher, to Lead New Comprehensive Diabetes Center at UC San Diego

Dr. Alan SaltielPioneering insulin researcher Alan R. Saltiel, PhD, will join the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as professor and director of a new Comprehensive Diabetes Center at UC San Diego. 

His work has made major advances in the understanding of obesity, diabetes and other metabolic disorders. Dr. Saltiel comes to UC San Diego from the Life Sciences Institute at University of Michigan, where he was director. More

  

Dr. Daniel Werb Receives Avenir Award for Work in HIV Intervention and Prevention

Dr. Daniel WerbUC San Diego epidemiologist Daniel Werb, PhD, has received a prestigious Avenir Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Dr. Werb is internationally respected for his prevention and policy work in drug addiction and HIV/AIDS.

The award carries a $1.5 million grant that will support a new project aimed at controlling the spread of addiction using public health tools that are already available. More
