Junior Faculty Career Transition Award

Stein Clinical Research Building
Stein Clinical Research Building, School of Medicine Campus

Introduction

The Department of Medicine is invested in enhancing the success of our junior faculty members during the transition from mentored research awards (individuals in the penultimate year of their K01, K08, K23, K99 or VA CD2 Career Development Award) to research independence as an R01-funded investigator.

Recognizing that we are currently in a period during which this transition has been difficult because of lower NIH pay lines, the Department will begin a new program to provide funds to aid junior faculty members during this transition period.

Eligibility

Up to four awards of $50,000 will be made yearly to promising junior faculty members who meet the following criteria.

  • Will serve as an Assistant Professor in any salaried faculty series in good standing.
  • Will submit an initial R01 application within 6 months of the request for a Transition Award and enroll in the Clinical Research Enhancement through Supplemental Training (CREST) grant writing course.
  • Will have senior faculty support, as demonstrated by a commitment to mentor the writing of the R01, specifically reviewing and commenting upon its aims and methods, and providing research space for conducting the R01.
  • Will have secured sufficient other funding from the applicant’s mentor, the Division, or other societal or philanthropic organizations to support a full-time appointment.
  • Will provide the “Specific Aims” and “Other Personnel” to the review committee.

Faculty members may apply twice for the award, but receive it only once.

The $50,000 can be used for any purpose, including salary support, technical support or laboratory support or supplies, but must be used with the first three years after the award, and is non transferable.

Review Process

Application must be made by October 1, and final decisions of the finance committee will be made by December 1 prior to the academic year in which the award is available.

Criteria for the successful applicant will include scientific rigor, the promise of the junior faculty member for a career in academic medicine in the Department and a scientific theme that is congruent with the goals of the research mission of our Department.

Applications will be reviewed by a review committee composed of senior faculty from the Department of Medicine. The Review Committee will rate applications based on the aforementioned review criteria and will make recommendations regarding the disposition of applications to the Department of Medicine Finance Committee.

Funding will be awarded based on the merit of the applications received and funds available to the Department for the Junior Faculty Career Transition program.
