Primary Care Pathway

The Primary Care Pathway is a new program within the UC San Diego Internal Medicine Residency Program. This pathway is for residents that have matched into the traditional “Categorical” program and have a specific interest in pursuing a career in primary care. Residents may opt in to the Primary Care Pathway during their second or third year of residency.

The goal of this pathway is to prepare residents for a career in primary care by optimizing their clinical experience to promote excellence in ambulatory medicine. This is accomplished through participation in core ambulatory rotations combined with individualized selection of additional elective ambulatory subspecialties, thereby enabling participants to increase exposure and knowledge in fields relevant to outpatient care.

Participating residents will contribute to outpatient morning conferences, learn about the business of medicine and form relationships with mentors in a variety of primary care settings. During the second and third years of residency, participants in the Primary Care Pathway may have the opportunity to do more outpatient rotations as compared to those in the traditional track.
