Thank you for your interest in the UC San Diego Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Training Program. The goal of this residency program is to ensure balanced, comprehensive training in both internal medicine and pediatrics providing graduates competitive opportunities to pursue multiple career options or subspecialty fellowships.
Combined training at UC San Diego includes a total of 48 months of rotations equally divided between internal medicine and pediatrics. Residents rotate every three months between the two departments. Our program was founded in 1994, and its strength lies in the long-established academic and clinical expertise of both parent departments. Although younger than some of the other medicine/pediatrics programs across the nation, our program offers an equally exciting and diverse academic training environment dedicated to combined medicine and pediatrics training. As an accredited program, successful completion of the four years of training at UC San Diego means graduates are board eligible to sit for both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics.
One of the most attractive aspects of our program is the unique bond the medicine/pediatrics residents have with one another. Our program is relatively small — a total of 16 residents spread over four years of training. Medicine/Pediatrics residents get to interact with one another throughout the four years, becoming a great support system for each other both during and after residency training. As a Medicine/Pediatrics graduate of this program in 1999, I can attest to the outstanding training you will receive here and also to the friendliness and support of the house staff. It is my philosophy to support each one of my residents not only through their training but also to provide counseling in career development in whatever career path they wish to pursue.
