Career Planning

The faculty of the UC San Diego Department of Medicine is comprised of talented clinicians, nationally recognized scientists, and skillful teachers who are easily accessible to residents seeking guidance in career planning. We take great pride in our graduating residents and are strongly committed to launching them into highly successful internal medicine careers. We offer annual career planning seminars to equip residents with the tools they need to obtain the jobs or fellowships they seek.

Graduates' Career Paths (2004-2016)

Graduates of the UC San Diego Internal Medicine Training Program are highly trained internists with skills and capabilities well suited to a variety of career paths, ranging from fellowships to primary care medicine, hospital medicine or global health.

Approximately 65% of the graduating housestaff seek subspecialty training. The majority of our residents obtain their top choices for fellowship training at prestigious programs around the country, including many who choose to stay at UC San Diego.

Many of our graduates choose to remain in Southern California and have matched very well despite the competitiveness of academic fellowship programs in this area. For those graduates wishing to remain in general internal medicine practice, the growing San Diego community offers many excellent practice opportunities.

The career paths of our graduates over the past twelve years are summarized below.
