The mission of the UC San Diego Internal Medicine Residency Program is to provide a superior academic environment with diverse clinical and research opportunities so that each resident receives the training necessary to achieve his or her career aspirations.
Our training environment provides a wide range of clinical and academic experiences designed to prepare you for a multitude of different career opportunities in internal medicine. Experience is available in clinical settings ranging from community outreach clinics to academic tertiary/quaternary referral centers. The large and diverse San Diego community, the proximity to the international border and the presence of a world-class tertiary referral center provides a fascinating and diverse patient population.
Our faculty includes world leaders in both clinical medicine and basic research. Under their guidance and supervision, our residents are encouraged to assume primary responsibility for patient care and to perform research.
Many of the recent innovations in the residency program have been crafted by the residents in cooperation with faculty and program leadership.
Our program supports a diverse group of nearly 100 residents. The camaraderie and high quality of our residents are the hallmarks of our residency program. Residents work closely with each other and our faculty, creating a thriving learning environment.
Graduates of our program regularly go on to accept highly competitive opportunities in clinical practice as well as in the most selective fellowship programs in the nation.
