Ken Kaushansky, M.D., M.A.C.P.The UC San Diego Department of Medicine is a leading center for patient care, research, and teaching in internal medicine.

From arthritis to respiratory disease, from hypertension to cancer - we are dedicated to translating laboratory discoveries into better ways to detect, treat, and prevent disease.

The Department of Medicine is the largest of the distinguished departments in the UC San Diego School of Medicine, with over 420 full-time faculty members and nearly 90 academic researchers.

Our internal medicine specialty training programs include 105 resident physicians, 80 ACGME fellows, and 158 postdoctoral research fellows.


The UC San Diego Department of Medicine is dedicated to clinical excellence through service, innovation and education.


 

Our Research

The Department of Medicine is engaged in nearly 450 different biomedical research programs this year, with a research budget of $113.6 million.

Our faculty members are at the forefront of translational research, bringing new scientific knowledge rapidly and safely to the bedside.

Our National Rankings

The Department of Medicine is recognized for its leadership in the most respected national rankings of clinical and research institutions.

Four UC San Diego Department of Medicine subspecialties ranked among the nation's best on the U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" list for 2009:

  •   Respiratory Diseases (14th).
  •   Rheumatology (21st).
  •   Kidney Disease (43rd).
  •   Cancer (47th).
     

In "Best Graduate Schools 2010" from U.S. News & World Report, the UC San Diego School of Medicine ranks 15th in research and 26th in primary care. The HIV/AIDS program (Division of Infectious Diseases and Owen Clinic) is ranked 8th in the nation.

The Gastrointestinal Endoscopy program of the Division of Gastroenterology is rated one of the top in the nation in the 2009 rankings from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

“It’s a testament to UCSD’s clinical excellence that we have more physicians on the ‘Top Doctors’ list than any other medical center in San Diego,” said Dr. Daniel G. Blanchard, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Chief of Clinical Cardiology at Thornton Hospital.

Dr. Blanchard has been named to San Diego Magazine’s “Top Doctors” for the sixth straight year.

Of his selection again this year, he said simply, “It’s a real honor to hear that your peers think you’re doing a good job.”

Moores UCSD Cancer Center


Dr. Barbara A. Parker is Medical Director of Oncology Services at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. Recently, she reflected on her first year in that role.

“We have made progress on many fronts,” she said, crediting the Cancer Center team, the University, the hospital, and the clinical enterprise for their support.

Dr. Parker is Professor of Clinical Medicine in the UCSD Division of Hematology-Oncology, where she received her own fellowship training.
