About the Department of Medicine
What We Do
The Department of Medicine at UC San Diego is a leading center for clinical care, research, and teaching. We are dedicated to translating laboratory discoveries into better methods to detect, prevent and treat disease. We are fully dedicated to and proud of our educational mission. As part of a research-intensive academic medical center, we offer training programs in both general internal medicine and subspecialties in an inclusive, rich educational environment.
Who We Are
With nearly 500 full-time faculty members and over 100 academic researchers, the Department of Medicine is the largest of the distinguished departments in the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Our internal medicine specialty training programs include 143 resident physicians, 106 ACGME fellows, and 110 postdoctoral research fellows.
At present, UC San Diego boasts national and international accolades for the excellence of its educational programs. The School of Medicine consistently ranks among the Top 10 nationally in research funding and its clinical programs have earned a number of distinguished awards for quality patient care.
UC San Diego Health ranks in the top tier of academic hospitals and health systems, and over the past few years has constructed a number of incredible new inpatient and outpatient spaces.
The Department has routinely been recognized for its leadership in the most respected national rankings of clinical and research institutions. Our subspecialties at UC San Diego Health received top-50 rankings on the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals.”
Our Legacy
In 1960, the University of California established UC San Diego as an integral part of the UC system. From the outset, UC San Diego emphasized educating the next generation of California scientists and engineers, which was expanded with the launch of the School of Medicine in 1968. Like its parent university, the school has placed a high standard for linking basic and clinical discovery with advanced methods for delivering outstanding, compassionate care to patients.
Our Mission
- To deliver the most advanced and compassionate clinical care to our patients.
- To train the physician leaders of tomorrow in clinical medicine and translational biomedical research.
- To establish new insights into the scientific underpinnings of human health and disease.
